Choosing the Right Lighting for Your Swimming Pool

Last updated on March 13, 2019 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

One of the most important items to include when it comes to installing a backyard pool is adequate lighting. Though lighting might seem like an insignificant afterthought, it’s really a vital part of maintaining your pool’s safety. It can also be a way to add a touch of personalized style to your backyard oasis.

Install Internal Lights to Keep The Inside of Your Pool Visible

When it comes to internal pool illumination, you should install enough bright lights to be able to see down to the very bottom of the pool, even in the deep end. Taking this kind of safety precaution could be one of the best ways to help prevent a tragic drowning accident. It could also help you to see better when you’re cleaning debris out of your pool. And, of course, it helps the kids find the pool toys that have sunk down to the bottom! If you’re working with a reputable pool installation team, they should be able to give you advice about the right amount of lighting to include in your pool plans.

Add Outdoor Lighting to Your Poolside Area

In order to help make sure your entire poolside area is safe, you should also include plenty of bright lights not only inside the pool but throughout the surrounding area. Make sure you put in lighting that allows you to be able to clearly see every part of the pool’s surface from every angle. That way, whether someone is climbing up the pool’s ladder, walking down the steps, or diving into the deep end, you’ll be able to keep a close eye on them from any part of your deck or patio. This safety measure will be especially important when your pool is open during the evening, nighttime, or early morning hours.

Light Up Your Pathways & Yard for Premium Safety

Another place to include plenty of lighting is along any walkways, decks, or patio areas which you have surrounding your pool. You can choose to install several bright floodlights that will cover large portions of the yard, or mix it up by installing a combination of floodlights, lamps, strings of lights, and pathway lights. If you install pathway lights, be sure to include enough to put one light every six to eight inches along the pathway.

Pool, Patio & Backyard Lighting is Also About Style, Not Just Safety

Though safety is of primary importance when it comes to illuminating your swimming pool, it’s not your only consideration. You can also use lighting to add some pizazz, fun, and ambiance to your poolside area. Your pool area lighting choices can set the tone for whatever mood you want to create. If you’re looking to generate a fun, party atmosphere, some bright, flashing color changing lights could be just right for your pool. If you want to promote a soothing, classy mood for your pool area, consider adding some illuminated water features.

In this first installment of our article series on selecting ideal lighting for your pool, we’ve looked at two of the main reasons for including light fixtures in your backyard pool and surrounding areas. In the next article, we’ll start to explore some of the pros and cons of different lighting varieties that are out there on the market today, beginning with incandescent pool lights.
