In everything from automobiles to home lighting to pool lighting, LED lights seem to be the wave of the future. These lights have earned their popularity for a number of solid reasons. In this third installment of this three-part series of articles (see Part 1 & 2), we’ll take a look at some of the pros and cons of LED pool lights.
Advantages of LED lights for Your Pool
There are plenty of benefits that LED pool lights have to offer. First, they’re far more energy efficient than incandescent light bulbs. Have you ever noticed that LED light bulbs don’t seem to get as hot as traditional incandescent light bulbs? That’s because they produce light differently than incandescent light bulbs, and not as much of their energy is wasted on producing heat. In fact, LED light bulbs are able to produce the same amount of illumination at only 50 percent of the temperature of their incandescent counterparts. Over time, think of the amount of energy cost savings you could enjoy if you install LED instead of incandescent lights in your pool!
The second advantage of LED pool lights we’re going to look at is their versatility when it comes to color. With today’s LED pool lights, you can choose from a whole host of your favorite colors to create an exciting, stylish look for your outdoor oasis. If your pool was illuminated with traditional incandescent pool lights, the only way you could traditionally change their color was to manually place different colored plastic panels over the light fixtures (ie colored filters). This method seems both antiquated and inconvenient compared to today’s quick and easy color swapping options available with modern LED pool lighting. There are even LED light options where the colors can be changed remotely at the touch of a button.
Disadvantages of LED Pool Lights
One of the reasons people are sometimes reluctant to get LED lighting for their pools is the initial cost of installation. This cost can be significantly higher than installing traditional incandescent lights. The bulbs themselves also tend to cost more to replace than incandescent replacement bulbs. However, if you factor in the predicted amount which you’ll save in energy costs, installing LED lights will probably still end up saving you money in the long run.
Practical Tips for LED Pool Lights
As with incandescent lights or any other lighting option for your pool, be sure to seek out professional advice about where in the pool to position your pool light fixtures, as well as the number of fixtures you’ll need to adequately illuminate your pool. The number of lights required will vary based on the size and shape of the pool. Always follow manufacturer instructions for the initial installation of your lights as well as bulb replacement procedures. You may want to take your pool’s interior color into consideration when it comes to choosing lighting colors, though, of course, a color-changing LED light system is a great option for virtually any pool.
LED pool lights are a popular choice because of their versatility and energy efficiency. In the next article, we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of fiber-optic pool lights.
