Family Pool Time: Water Activities for All Ages

Last updated on October 6, 2017 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Pools are excellent choices for multi-generational families, allowing those of all ages to experience the many health benefits related to an active lifestyle and outdoor recreation. In fact, an in-ground swimming pool might just offer the most versatile combination of playground, gym, and outdoor living potential per square foot, compared to any other change you can make to your property.

Pool Benefits for Kids

Today’s kids are experiencing more anxiety and stress, as well as obesity-related health issues, than any other generation in known history. A pool is just the thing to improve their self-esteem and reduce the stress they feel. Compared to organized sports and activities, experts are noting the superior benefits of outdoor free play. In fact, one physician heralds unstructured activity as extremely significant: “Encouraging free play, especially the outdoors, may be an antidote to the risks of indoor modern life.”

And whether or not you’re of the it-takes-a-village mindset, you realize that your kids will be safer in your own yard than across town. Of course, you also know that having a pool in your backyard will make your place a kid magnet, allowing you to supervise exactly what your children — and their friends — are up to.

Pros of pool-related fun are many and include the power of water resistance to build muscle tone and burn fat with less effort than other activities. Water activities also encourage large muscle coordination and hand/eye coordination. Long-term effects can include both physical and mental health, since kids who regularly engage in physically challenging activities typically result in better behavior and even better grades.

Kids can be active in the water by holding relay races, playing water polo, diving for items, or just swimming and splashing around. And because water activities are easier on your body than traditional sports, other family members and friends are free to join in the fun along with the kids — something that’s increasingly a lost art in our modern world.

Pool Benefits for Adults

You don’t have to have a class or an instructor in order to exercise in the water! Whether you choose to do water aerobics (with or without a pool noodle [video]), walk [video] or do yoga [video], water activities can be appropriate for adults of any age, including senior citizens [video].

Benefits of water activities for adults include these:

• Unlike other outdoor activities during warmer months, water activities help you remain cool.
• Water activities can actually reduce your stress levels and your blood pressure.
• Because water exercises are low-impact ones, they’re easy on your joints.
• They allow you to burn calories even faster than other exercises.
• If you’re prone to falling, the natural buoyancy of water makes injuries less likely to occur.
• Moving in water can promote an increase in strength, endurance, and flexibility.

In addition, water activities are very social! So you can gather all ages in the pool, where you can all get some exercise and have a good time together.
