Just as people are beginning to avoid preservatives and pesticides and starting to care more about what they feed themselves, more pet owners are also thinking about what dangerous things could be lurking in their dog’s food. Your dog’s food probably contains some ingredients that might shock you.
One of these is the preservative ethoxyquin (EQ), which, like most preservatives, is known to be toxic. In the unlucky factory workers who were exposed to it, EQ has been shown to cause agent-orange-like side effects, including chronic diarrhea, skin cancer, blindness, birth defects, and leukemia. It has also been shown to cause stomach, spleen, and liver cancers, as well as immune deficiency syndrome.
You’d probably think twice about including EQ in your own diet, so do you really feel safe feeding it to your pet?
