Why You Should Add a Porch

Last updated on December 8, 2010 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

For homeowners looking to increase the value of their home, expand their living space, and add overall aesthetics to their home and property, a porch addition may be a wise choice. Although porches were once used simply as an outdoor area to take off muddy work boots and clothes, their appearances and uses have expanded over the years.

Gone are the days of drab 2X4 floor boards, cement pillars, deteriorating bases, and mismatched roofs. With the expertise of a licensed, experienced contractor, the possibilities for your dream porch are nearly endless. You can choose from traditional treated lumber or low-maintenance PVC lumber. The roof will blend seamlessly with the house, making it appear as though the porch is not an “attachment” but rather, an expansion. Overhead lighting and ceiling fans can be installed for comfort and safety on those late nights.

For those that enjoy mornings watching and listening to the small animals and birds feed at a bird-feeder or splash in a birdbath, an enclosed porch can provide an excellent view, while also keeping you protected for unwanted insects. An enclosed porch provides a roof for protection from the elements, as well as screen panels for protection from insects. You can still achieve the outdoor feeling without dealing with mosquitoes and moths. Many people also like to let their cats or dogs relax in the safety of an enclosed porch, without the constraints of a leash.

Although a porch obviously serves as an area to kick off your shoes before entering your home, it can also be great for entertainment. With a properly designed porch, you can add a great deal of space. You can set up a patio dining set on one end for outdoor family dinners on a warm, summer evening. You can also purchase a traditional wooden porch swing or even a more contemporary one that folds down into a bed, perfect for an afternoon nap. On a lazy summer afternoon, curling up with a book on a porch swing will offer hours of comfort and relaxation.

Many people also like the added space that a porch addition gives them. Setting up gym equipment on an outdoor porch serves as a motivational area that combines the comforts and privacy of your home with an outdoor atmosphere. If you want to enjoy your enclosed porch all year round in any weather, you may consider having a heater, fan, and/or air conditioning unit installed.

You can create a basic enclosed porch complete with a patio set and porch swing. Or, if you really want to impress your visitors, consider making the outdoor area just like another room of your home. Think hardwood floors, large windows that can be opened for a breeze in the springtime, a comfortable couch and recliner set, a breakfast nook, and outdoor planters complete with bright, colorful plants. For privacy or comfort from the bright sun, install wooden blinds or elegant curtains that can blow in the breeze.

A porch, whether enclosed or simply protected with a roof will create an outdoor atmosphere complete with protection from an afternoon rain shower. The possibilities are endless. Whether it will serve as an outdoor exercise area or a morning breakfast nook, a porch is a great addition to any home.
