Why Does My Dog Steal My Things?

Last updated on October 18, 2011 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

If your dog has stolen something of yours and perhaps buried it, there are a few explanations for his behavior. Occasionally, dogs will steal things from you because they have noticed your interest in an item and want to use it to bait you into playing with them or chasing them.

The more common explanation for your dog’s thievery, however, lies in his history. When dogs still lived in the wild, hoarding was a crucial skill. If a dog wanted to eat his entire kill, he would probably need to hide or bury part of it for later to prevent other animals from getting to it.

No longer hunters, today’s domesticated dogs still steal and hoard items they deem valuable. This could include food, toys, or his favorite human’s possessions, but whatever he’s stealing, your dog is usually doing it for the same reason. Usually, your dog steals and hoards your things so that he can keep them safe.
