Finding its way mid-way between Old World and Modern, Traditional interior design finds its way into more American homes than any other style; in fact, it can be called American Tradition. Furnishings can resemble designs from the French countryside, the Far East, or England of the 1700s. Strains of the Traditional design include Nineteenth Century Neoclassical, Victorian, Colonial, and British Colonial Revival. You can certainly combine elements from various strains or select a particular focus for each room.
Traditional Colors and Fabrics
The color palette of Traditional design consists primarily of greens and peaches, along with tan and aubergine (or eggplant). Accented with warm wood tones and bronze fixtures and furniture in deeper hues like burgundy, navy, and brown, the result is an inviting yet elegant disposition.
Combining patterns and fabric types within the color scheme contributes to the warm, homey feel of Traditional decor. Damask weaves are perfect for this look, pairing well with different kinds of tassels and trim. Windows are framed in more formal swag/panel combinations, often with fringe accents accentuating the swags and tasseled cords loosely wrapping the panels. Other fabrics throughout the room can take on a variety of patterns: Stripes, florals, and even plaids can be combined for a coherent Traditional look. An assortment of luxurious and easy-care fabrics can also come into play, ranging from silk and cashmere to linen and cotton.
Traditional Furniture and Accent Pieces
Traditional décor relies heavily on symmetry and balance. From furniture to wall art, pairs of items and gilt help offer a sense of propriety. Colors can be bold, against the backdrop of the walls painted in neutral beige, taupe, or a soft gray. Think of a still-life oil painting in vibrant colors, framed with a gilt frame flanked by twin silver candle sconces and centered over a cherry entry table. The lines of the table are gentle but curvy, free from any signs of wear and polished to a shine.
Across from the table sits a pair of wing-backed chairs in a floral pattern with more muted versions of the colors of the oil painting. Between them is a small round table to match the entry table across from it. The accent table is simply graced with a grand vase holding a gorgeous arrangement of silk flowers that mirror the hues of the oil painting across the room.
In a Traditional home, upholstered furniture pieces can be layered with an assortment of throw pillows and blankets for a comfortable look and feel. A striped blanket might be on the back of a sofa upholstered in a floral design, and an assortment of throw pillows with a variety of complementary colors can provide the perfect accents.
