What’s even better during those hot summer months than taking a family trip to a world-class water park? How about installing a miniature water park of your very own in your backyard? Then you can enjoy the excitement and refreshment of your private oasis any time you like. The kids can swim, splash and play to their heart’s content. You’ll have the ideal spot for hosting incredible poolside parties. You may even decide to cancel some of your travel plans in favor of a restful and relaxing “stay-cation.”

All it will take to transform your pool and patio into your summer dream destination is some investment, planning, and creativity. In this series of articles, we’ll look at the advantages and disadvantages of putting in a backyard water park as well as explore some popular backyard water park ideas to give you a little inspiration.

What Comes First? Talking it Over With the Family

The first consideration you’ll need to make is which features you want to include in your backyard water park project. This would be a great topic to discuss with your entire family so you can get everyone’s input. To get the ball rolling, ask everyone what their favorite features are when they go to a public water park.

For example, do you have a family member who enjoys drifting down a lazy river? Do the kids or teens look forward to careening down those thrilling water slides? Does another family member simply want to relax in a calm, shady spot next to the pool beside some lush plants?

You may not be able to realize all of your back yard water park aspirations right away, but you could have everyone write down their own personal wish list. Then you have a discussion to figure out which items are near the top of each person’s list. The more people in the family that are interested in a certain feature, the more of a priority it would be for you to include that particular item in your plan.

Start Price Checking and Find a Contractor

This method of choosing which features to add to your private water park will also give you an opportunity to find out how much each item is likely to cost. You can scout around online, check with your local pool supply dealer, and try to get several bids for the different items on your list.

Before choosing a contractor, you’ll want to check their references to make sure you’re working with a reputable company. It may be wise to steer clear of companies whose bids seem much higher or much lower than all the other contractors.

You may also want to ask if you can see some examples of their work either in a photo portfolio or, preferably, in person. This will give you a feel for their level of expertise. Online reviews are another valuable resource to consider when choosing a contractor to install your backyard water park.

When it comes to selecting the layout and features of a backyard water park, every person’s preferences are unique. When your family puts in a customized water park, you’ll have the satisfaction of getting to include only the features and design plan that best suits your needs and budget. In our next article, we’ll consider some of the pros and cons of backyard water parks. Then we’ll take a closer look at specific features you could choose to include.
