Ensuring Safety in Mines With Perforated Metals

Last updated on July 30, 2010 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

While sometimes hazardous, mining can be a very profitable industry. Every day, thousands of workers head underground to dig out coal, gems, and other valuable resources found underground. They endure a dark, damp, dirty underground environment and work hard for a day’s wage. However, mining industries seek to maintain a safe setting for employees to work. Mining equipment is built to withstand the dangers of being under the earth. The equipment is often built from extremely durable metal to hold up under the wear and tear of constant heavy work.

Perforated metal can be found all over a mine. Elevator buckets built to carry large quantities of coal are built from high-grade metal that can hold up massive weight and deal with coal being dumped in constantly. These buckets link together to help sort coal by size and clean out refuse material. The coal is washed and prepared to be taken out of the mine to trucks, often via conveyor belts.

Even the elevators built to carry workers down deep into the mine may have perforated metal or metal grate bottoms. These elevators are often called cages. Several people need to cram into these to make the trip down to their place of work, and the metal construction needs to be thoroughly stable and built to hold several bodies.

Next, perforated metal also helps to take care of dust problems in a mine. Dust and debris coming out from various portions of the mine can cause a huge problem for equipment and especially for the breathing of miners as they try to fulfill their work responsibilities. Perforated metal panels can provide a way to keep the walls of the mine secure and also offer a path for dust to filter out.

Also, metal wire screens fulfill a wide range of functions in a mining setting. A rotary screen system washes the coal to prepare it for use. Vibrating screens can help to keep the flow of coal steady and keep it washed at a regular rate. The builders of a mine can choose to customize these screens however they want, from the spacing between wire to the size of the wire.

Even above ground, metal fencing might surround the mine area to secure the area and mark off the property. These fences may be constructed with profile bar or v-wire. Custom metal products are everywhere in and around a mine. So the next time you see some coal burning, think about the many metal products involved in its production.
