Should I Feed My Dog People Food?

Last updated on October 10, 2013 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Many people hold the belief that feeding their dogs “people food” is terribly unhealthy for their pets. This is actually not entirely true. It’s probably not a smart idea to feed your dog from the table or from your own dinner plate, as this reinforces his idea that begging and whining for food produces results. However, if executed properly, feeding your dog people food doesn’t have to be a problem.

In fact, a great many people, in an effort to help their dogs live healthier and more natural lives, make their own dog food using ingredients usually reserved for- You guessed it!- people food. This is a perfectly acceptable option, and considering the disgusting ingredients and reprehensible practices of commercial dog food, feeding your dog people food is often considered a better choice.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are as healthy for dogs as they are for humans; just be sure to limit your pet’s intake of fruit, as too much can cause stomach upset. Lean meats, such as chicken, turkey, or fish are also great options. Remember to choose foods that are low in fats and sugars, and also remember that if you feed your dog extra calories through people food, it is essential that you reduce the amount of dog food that he receives.
