At D. R. Hartman Construction, we know environmentally friendly and sustainable buildings are on your mind when adding to your home or business. We want you to know that our pre-engineered buildings (PEB) are environmentally and economically friendly. PEB are made from steel, the number one recycled product in America. In fact, steel is recycled in greater volumes than paper, plastic, aluminum and glass combined!
While our steel buildings are not pre-engineered green buildings, our steel buildings are environmentally friendly. Did you know that about 88 percent of all steel products and nearly 100 percent of structural steel beams and plates used in construction are recycled into new products? Steel PEB are the perfect environmentally friendly product to complete your next project. Whether it’s a church, a large storage facility, or an indoor sports arena, the sky is the limit with PEB.
According to the EPA, steel cans that you recycled are separated from other metals in recycling plants and sent back to steel mills where they are combined with other scrap to create new steel. Because of this process, the steel in your building frequently reflects at least a 25% recycled amount by volume, and it can even consist of close to 100% recycled steel. This means the steel in your building is already recycled, and it will be recycled again after its lifecycle.
In addition to being recycled, steel is also friendly for your wallet. The EPA says that it is cheaper to recycle steel rather than to create new steel from raw materials. Not using raw materials means that the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere are drastically reduced. For every ton of steel recycled, 2500 pounds of iron ore, 1400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone are not used. And, in 2008 alone, more than 14 million tons of steel were rescued from old automobiles that had been turned to scrap metal. That is an impressive amount of natural resources being conserved for the future, and huge amounts of harmful greenhouse gases that were not released into the atmosphere! The planet will definitely thank you for choosing steel in your next project.
A green building for you can mean many things. Environmentally, it means the protection of the biodiversity and ecosystems, not producing greenhouse gases, helping improve air and water quality, reducing waste, and conserving resources for the future. Economically, you can reduce operating costs and enhance your property. Most of all, you will feel great about helping the world you live in.
Our PEB are not only a green way to add value and space to your property, but because portions of it are already recycled, it is an economically friendly way to add sustainability. PEB’s can be made into just about any kind of building you need, and come in many shapes and sizes. They can be used for everything from a church or community building, to an airplane hanger or horse arena.
