Is It Ok to Share People Food with My Dog?

Last updated on October 10, 2011 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Everyone has heard warnings against feeding dogs “people food.” They warn that people food is unhealthy for dogs, and they also claim that it can lead to obesity. However, if done properly, making your own dog food from people food ingredients or simply adding some people food to his meals is a great way to introduce a variety of nutrients into his often extremely limited diet.

People food can be a healthier, more natural choice for dogs, especially considering the surprisingly disgusting ingredients and reprehensible practices of commercial dog foods. In order to ensure that your pet stays healthy while eating people food, be sure to monitor his calories. Usually, the obesity claim is rooted in individuals who feed their dog the table scraps from the unhealthy foods they themselves were eating. If a food is not healthy for you, it certainly won’t be healthy for your pet.

Furthermore, many people do this without lessening the amount of dog food their pet receives. This results in their pet consuming far too many calories, which then results in an overweight dog. Fresh fruits and vegetables are as healthy for dogs as they are for humans, although too much fruit can sometimes cause stomach upset. Lean meats such as fish, chicken, and turkey are also great choices, as well as raw bones (not chicken bones, as they could splinter).
