Depression in Teens

Last updated on May 10, 2012 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Depression is a dangerous illness that can lead to many different unsafe outcomes for both the person who is feeling depressed as well as those in contact with the person. The exact cause of depression is unknown, but is though to be caused by chemical changes in the brain. Drug or alcohol abuse, certain medical conditions, some medications, and sleeping problems can play a role in depression. Statistics show that 20 percent of teens will experience depression before they reach adulthood, which means that 1 in 5 teens will at some point feel depressed.

Whether brought on by a break up, fighting with friends or family, the death of a friend or family member, or simply the stress of everyday life, depression is not something that should be taken lightly. Admitting to feeling depression is not an easy task and can often seem impossible to cope with, so consulting with a fiend, family member, or school counselor should be something to consider. If none of those things help, consult with a doctor to discuss medication and other treatment options.

If counseling and medication don’t seem to help, there are other options to consider, such as a therapeutic boarding school. Therapeutic boarding schools are designed and created to help troubled teens deal with their problems in a therapeutic and comforting environment through an extensive program including daily devotionals and activities. With the love and support provided at a therapeutic boarding school it may seem difficult to stay depressed. Happiness will no longer seem like an impossibility, but rather a friend waiting for you just around the corner.
