3 Types of Pool Covers, 3 Distinct Purposes

Last updated on April 2, 2018 by Sozo Staff 1 Comment

No matter what pool construction or liner type you choose, once your pool is installed, you will need to make sure you have a proper pool cover. You may not realize that there are many types of pool covers on the market, each to suit a particular purpose. Whatever the primary purpose of a cover, any type of cover will help keep unwanted debris from entering your pool, lessening the weight of pool maintenance tasks as well as the pressure on your pool’s filtration system. From safety to heating to winter protection, you’ll extend the lifetime of your pool and accomplish additional purposes by having a quality pool cover professionally installed.

Pool Cover Types: Safety Covers

If you’re a parent or grandparent of young kids, a safety cover is probably already on your radar. In addition to a pool fence with latching gate (more on that in another post), a safety cover is an important barrier in preventing accidental drowning. Safety pool covers aren’t just for children, though; they can protect adults as well.

Safety pool covers come in two basic types: open and closed. Open safety covers are made of mesh, which allows precipitation to permeate them. Closed safety covers are meant to be stretched across a pool. Because water or snow can collect atop this kind of cover, pumping off precipitation may be necessary; of course, that also means a closed cover will help keep your pool free from unwanted debris.

Pool Cover Types: Solar Covers

A second type of pool cover, the solar pool cover, is primarily meant to help maintain a comfortable temperature in your pool; however, solar pool cover also functions to keep debris out and provide safety. As the most affordable heating option for your pool, solar heating is only as effective as the sun is bright and warm. Solar pool covers also take time to work. If you’re interested in the most effective type of pool heater, we  recommend several top-rated electric and gas units and will review them in a future post. Here are some inexpensive pool heating options.

Buffalo Blizzard™ winter swimming pool cover

Pool Cover Types: Winter Covers

Also doubling as safety covers, winter pool covers are the most durable of the pool covers. Intended for use during the off-season, winter pool covers are meant to hold up under the harshest winter weather conditions. Even if you choose not to use any other type of cover, you will definitely want to purchase a quality winter cover to protect your investment.

Pool Cover Installation: Professionals Required

It’s important to talk with a pool professional before you choose a pool cover and install it yourself. As always, consider getting many estimates for installation and resist the urge to go with the bargain-basement price; you often get exactly what you pay for. Especially when it comes to a winter cover, you don’t want to risk an inferior cover or fit.

It’s great to learn that investing in a pool cover could help you protect your investment from your pets and foreign debris! My friend wants to try owning one, so he can exercise in the comfort of his home. I’ll probably share this with him so we can look around for a pool cover in the future.
