New Creations Boarding School was co-founded by Tim and Bonnie Cummings more than 35 years ago. The school has developed an approach centered on Christ for working with young people aged 12 to 17. Located on almost 600 acres of land in eastern Indiana, New Creations focuses on counseling for at-risk teens and teens exhibiting behavioral problems, such as defiance, rebellion, and others.
The counselors at New Creations Boarding School work spontaneously with students to decrease defensive reactions and to avoid rehearsed reactions or responses that sometimes occur during counseling appointments. New Creations believes counseling is most effective when it occurs as students continue their regular, every day lives. This structure is based on the Nouthetic (spiritual) methods of counseling developed by Dr. Jay E. Adams, PhD.
Male and female students are housed in separate facilities, and the school utilizes a system of levels for grading, aimed at linking students’ personal improvement with academic achievements. Students gain privileges as they advance from level to level. Most students require about eighteen months on campus to reach the level appropriate for their age.
Three goals guide the ministry and curriculum at New Creations: to aid young people’s spiritual development; to help students restore broken or strained family relationships; and guide students to achieve the highest level of academic success possible. Over the course of forty years of educating and ministering to troubled teens, New Creations’ level system has been highly effective at working towards these goals with students.
After initial diagnostic testing, the academic program can begin, and students’ daily progress begins to be monitored in accordance with the level system. A self-paced, computer-based curriculum provides students an academic program, tutoring service, and class schedule developed specifically to meet the needs of the student.
The level system is centered around incentives and consequences that reward or discourage students’ behavior. With round the clock care and a strict schedule that gradually rewards the students for good behavior, New Creations assesses a student’s initial functioning age level. Within usually fifteen to eighteen months, students advance in the level system until they are functioning at their actual age level. After two to four months of demonstrated behavioral stability the student is prepared to return home with his or her family.
New Creations has staff on hand 24 hours a day who are vigilant of students’ behavior. New Creations does not desire to play the role of a parent during a student’s stay at the school; however, the school can fill the role of caregiver.
New Creations offers families assistance in financing students’ enrollment and works with parents to determine whether New Creations Boarding School is right for their child. The application form for enrollment can be submitted via mail or electronically; parents are usually consulted within two to four days as to whether New Creations is able to assist their son or daughter.
